CRL selects Nevis appliances for its unique in-line, identity-based access control, real-time policy enforcement and comprehensive reporting for regulatory compliance.

Oct 19th, 2008-  The supercomputer facility at Computational Research Laboratories (CRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons Ltd, ranked as the fastest supercomputer in Asia, has deployed the comprehensive wire-speed LAN security LANenforcer appliances from Nevis Network in its facility in Pune, India.

CRL supercomputing facility serves performance hungry applications such as neural simulation, molecular simulation, computational fluid dynamics, crash simulation, and digital media animation and rendering. The other application areas that CRL addresses include financial modeling, seismic modeling, geophysical signal processing, weather prediction, medical imaging, nanotechnology, personalized drug discovery, real time rendering, and virtual worlds. CRL offers high performance and supercomputer system integration, research, applications and software services to its customers around the globe in the area of high performance computing. CRL assures all its customers complete security for their applications through the latest deep packet-level security technology and policy-based access. CRL after months of evaluation of available solutions meeting its security needs, has selected Nevis Networks LANenforcer appliances that provide identity-based network access control.

CRL chose the LANenforcer appliances for its unique in-line, identity-based access control, real-time policy enforcement and comprehensive reporting for regulatory compliance. The ability to provide role-based access and segregate users based on project teams and respective role, were essential to the CRL needs that required wire-speed with 10 Gbps throughput and processing of every packet entering the network against the security requirements.

LANenforcer security appliances offer comprehensive and continuous identity-based access control functionality on both pre- and post-connect basis. The automatic, clientless endpoint scan performs a security audit before allowing network access, quarantining any clients that fail to satisfy established security policies. Policy enforcement is achieved through per-user stateful firewall rules that create a “Personal DMZ” for every authorized user and guest on the LAN. The system also logs the identity of all users and monitors all network activity to help comply with regulatory requirements.

The LANenforcer security appliance is deployed between access switches and the network core, where it aggregates all the traffic to provide individualized access control, along with microsecond threat detection and response. This approach enables the LANenforcer to be integrated easily into any existing network infrastructure, including those requiring 10 Gbps Ethernet line-rate performance. Nevis uniquely provides multiple, highly integrated security services which run in parallel at 10 Gbps, raising the bar against traditional security devices that struggle with performance and latency effectively creating a bottleneck overlay to the underlying network. Nevis is able to achieve this high level of performance without compromising security with its LANsecure Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) that offers six clusters of four CPU engines, each supporting four-way hardware multi-threading.

“Air tight security and wire speed performance is where Nevis LANenforcer technology is at the best. We are happy to have our LANenforcer comprehensive LAN security appliances as a part of Asia’s fastest Supercomputing facility at CRL.” said Ajit Shelat, Sr. VP & Founder of Nevis Networks.  “With Nevis solution in place, CRL can leverage policy-based access to different project teams and automatically provide role-based differentiated access to all users connecting the network according to the client identity.  All this is done completely transparently at wire-speed while mitigating any threat  in a way that nobody else can do today.”
